Currant Clearwing

The adult Currant Clearwing moth is on the wing between late May and July. It is generally local in distribution but where it does occur, it can be fairly common. The best places to look for this species is allotments and gardens where the larval foodplants occur.

Larval Foodplants

The larval foodplants are redcurrant (Ribes rubrum), blackcurrant (Ribes nigrum) and gooseberry (Ribes uva-crispa). It is likely to also breed on other members of the Ribes family such as ornamental garden species including flowering currant (Ribes sanguineum). The larvae feed within the stems.

Distribution

The Currant Clearwing is likely to be more common than the maps below indicate. Searches of allotments where the larval foodplants occur using pheromone lures are likely to reveal many more colonies in the years to come.
